I call to Danuvius, voice of the river,
O god of many places, god of many names,
son of the mother, heart’s blood of the broad lands.
Ancient Danuvius, constant and changeable,
kind and capricious all at once, you know the flow
of humanity, you know the love of nations
and of men; yours is the blue of the cloudless sky,
yours is the oldest of stone, the hollow gorge,
the memory of waters long since diminished.
Noble Danuvius of the uncertain earth,
father of countless runnels and rills, I praise you
in all your guises, I praise you in all your names.
